s I write this we have just entered February, and the
season of Lent is coming soon.
“Lent” is from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “springtime”
and is understood as the holy springtime of the soul, a time for preparation,
planting, and growth.
Originally, Lent developed as a time devoted to those
preparing for baptism. Today, the period of Lent still has an emphasis on
reaffirming baptismal identity.
Our Lenten journey begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17,
and on that evening we will have a brief worship service at 7:30 p.m. You may
receive the imposition of ashes that evening. This first day of Lent reminds us
that unless we are willing to die to our old selves, we cannot be raised to new
life with Christ. Our Lenten pilgrimage is one of turning around, of changing
directions from self-absorption to being men, women, and young people for
others-the way of the cross. Please join us on this Lenten walk.
I will be leading a Lenten study on the Monday evenings in
Lent, beginning February 22 and going through March 29. Details to come. Plan
to study with us.
On April 1 we will have our Maundy Thursday potluck and
service, all beginning at 6:30 p.m.
May God walk with us toward the cross, and beyond. I will
see you on the road.
Grace &
Peace,
